The
first... six images are from Paullina Simons herself, and the apartment her
family shared in Leningrad, which she based Tatiana's apartment on. On a whim I had sent her some links to pictures of
apartment buildings in Russia and asked if any were similar to her
building that she used as the setting in The Bronze Horseman. Not
only was she kind enough to respond to my email, she sent me pictures of
her family's Fifth Soviet apartment she was raised in. The pictures are
from 1998 when she went back to her Leningrad for a visit.
The seventh image is an apartment building of a family friend,
remarkably still in use in 2004. I included Ms. Simons description of
it, which I think will not only interest you, but make you
look at your living conditions in a whole new light!
I
can't tell you how thrilled I was to receive this email with the images
of Fifth Soviet,
it truly was a gift!
Enjoy!

"apartment
building where my father's good friend Anatoly Studenkov
still lives, now, in 2004, a lifelong citizen of Soviet
Russia. He is the one to whom Tatiana and Alexander is
dedicated. His life and his building has great poignancy
for me because I can't help thinking that that's where I
would be living, now, in 2004, had my father not
believed in a better life for his family."
